FRIDAY 7/07/17
On Friday, 7/07/17, semester 3 students of ALAM, from classes DNS 21 and DME 35, volunteered themselves to participate in a "Warisan Budaya" event organised by UNESCO at Dataran Pahlawan.
This event marks the 9th anniversary of Melaka being recognized as a world heritage area. As known, Melaka is where most of the history of Malaya begins from the entrance of Parameswara to evolving into a land rich in business. Melaka is recognised for its contribution in Malaysias early history. This is done as an effort to preserve our history as well as to further motivate us to be proud and strive for our well diversed country.
So, on Friday, semester 3 students of ALAM, participated in the opening parade. We were dressed as "pedagagng", old time merchant, whom came to Malaya for trading purposes. There were four Merchant groups, the Arabians, the Chinese, the Indians, and the portugis. We were instructed to walk as a group in a parade like march, to mark the opening of the event. It was all planned and organised by the officials
As for me and my close friends, we were dressed as Indian Merchants. We were given a "vashti", traditional indian pants, a plain white shirt, a cloth around our shoulder and a guni bag to signify the race. We were the third group to walk in before the honoured guest and fellow members of the crowd. We walked before them, formed a line, bowed and then marched out.
It was a great, fun and thrilling experience as we get a chance to experience the lifestyle and culture of olden times in Malaya. It was also a great exposure to equipments, vehicles and dressings used and worn in the 19th century. I felt like i travelled back in time to the days before independence.
In addition, upon the completion of event, there were plenty of free gifts, bags with merchandise, as well as free foods through out the night. It was an unforgettable experience and great memory to bring along.
-It is important we preserve history as we could be educated from it, conserve the country and we could be aware not to repeat our mistakes again-
